SOBRIETY     SEATBELTS      SPEED      DISTRACTIONS

Multiplier Effect

It obviously is not safe to practice any risky driving behavior. However, the risk greatly intensifies as several unsafe driving habits are practiced.

Consider a teen that is driving home alone on Saturday night. The teen is participating in a risky habit — driving at night. However, consider a teen that is driving 10 mph over the speed limit, without a seatbelt, while talking on a cell phone, with four other teen passengers and listening to loud music on his way home from a party Saturday night.

The second teen’s risk of an accident is much greater than the first teen’s. The second teen was driving with the risk factor of driving at night but also the risk factors of:

¨     Teen passengers

¨     Loud music

¨     Speeding

¨     Cell phone

¨     No seatbelt

It is dangerous to drive with one risk factor but many times more risky to drive with multiple risk factors. It’s like playing Russian Roulette with several bullets in the gun.
